Covid-19: Secondary school students in exit classes, to resume on August 4.

The Federal Government announced this afternoon that exit classes for Nigerian secondary schools are to resume on August 4th, 2020. The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Education through a press statement that was signed by its Director for Press and Public Relations, Ben Goong.

This will enable the students to have 2 weeks within which to prepare for their West African Examination Council (WAEC) examination which is scheduled to start on August 17, 2020.

This unanimous decision was reached during a virtual consultative meeting between the Federal Ministry of Education, the Commissioner for Education in each of the 36 states of the Federation, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), the proprietors of private schools, and Chief Executives of examination bodies.

Breaking: Secondary school students in exit classes to resume August 4 for WAEC exams starting August 17

As part of the fallout for the meeting, it was agreed that the exit classes should resume immediately after the Sallah break, from August 4, 2020, to enable the students in graduating classes to prepare for the WAEC examinations which have been scheduled to start from August 17, 2020.

The meeting also resolved that a passionate appeal should be made to Federal Government through the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 and public-spirited Nigerians for assistance to schools across the country to enable them fast track the preparations for safe reopening as agreed.

The statement also noted that another meeting is to be convened tomorrow July 28 between the Federal Ministry of Education and Chief Executives of examination bodies namely NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS to harmonize their examination dates, which will be convened to stakeholders expeditiously by the Federal Ministry of Education.

Nairametrics had a couple of weeks ago reported that the Federal Government suspended the reopening of schools under its control for the forthcoming WAEC exams.

The Minister for Education, Adamu Adamu, while making the announcement advised WAEC to suspend its exams and also urged state governments to toe the line of the federal government as it wasn’t the right time to reopen the schools. He said that he would prefer the that students lose and academic year than to be exposed to the risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
